A Saturday in Highland Park
Highland Park rewards people who walk it slowly. The stretch of Figueroa between Avenue 56 and Avenue 60 holds a 1927 bowling alley, eleven murals and the best horchata cold brew in the city, and you can do all of it without moving your car.
This is the order I'd do it in on a Saturday. It assumes you start around nine and don't mind eating twice. Four of the six stops are free.
Get there before 9:30 and you'll get a table. The horchata cold brew is the one everyone orders and it deserves it.
Eleven murals in four blocks, and the newest three went up this spring.

The oldest bowling alley in LA, restored to its 1927 self — the chandeliers are built from the old pin-setting machines. Walk in just to see it even if you don't bowl.

Matt Molina's neighborhood Italian with handmade pasta and a short, perfect menu. One of the best meals on the street.

A tight, sharply curated vinyl shop that moved here from New York's East Village. Good for an hour of flipping even if you don't collect.

Nancy Silverton's Roman-style pizza al taglio, sold by weight. Point at what looks good; they cut it and weigh it. A great cheap, casual finish to the day.
