What to do when it actually rains
It rains about thirty days a year here, and the whole city forgets how to function on every one of them. This route stays indoors from ten until dinner and keeps you off the 405.
Do it in this order and you'll never be outside for more than four minutes at a stretch.

Free every day, and nearly empty in bad weather. Start upstairs and work down so you end in the courtyard cafe.

Covered the whole way through. Get in the Sarita's line before one or you'll be standing for twenty minutes.

A five-minute walk from the market and completely covered. The 1893 atrium — wrought-iron stairs, cage elevators, a glass roof — is the most beautiful lobby in the city. Ground floor only, but that's the good part.

The biggest used-and-new bookstore in California, in an old bank. Head upstairs to the Labyrinth and the book tunnel — it's a maze, and it's free.

Free contemporary-art museum a block uphill. Reserve a same-day timed ticket on your phone and you'll walk right in, out of the rain.

End warm and dry a block away. Diner comfort food and the maple-bacon donut that started the whole trend. Small, unfussy, cash-friendly.
